But there wasn’t time to make a plan. Not at Kirby’s house. Her mom was coming home from work soon, and Spencer and eight bears couldn’t be there when she arrived.

“Here,” Kirby said, pressing a walkie-talkie into Spencer’s hand. He and the free bears were going to the TUBE for the night, to use the supplies there and decide their next move, but Kirby wasn’t happy about having to stay behind. “Keep me updated. I can help you again tomorrow as soon as my mom leaves for work. You can use my equipment and stuff. Or I could come meet you! At the TUBE! Or wherever you are.”

“Thanks, Kirby. I’ll let you know.” Spencer slipped the small walkie-talkie into his pocket. “We’d better get moving.” He looked at the bears, who were lined up from just inside Kirby’s front door, all the way to her bedroom. They were ready to make a break for the TUBE. Darwin was already holstered to Spencer’s chest with a secure length of rope.

A chorus of “Thank you, Kirby” rang through the house as Spencer took his place at the front of the line, ready to open the door.

“I’m going on three,” Spencer said loudly, so that everyone would hear him.

“And remember,” Aldo called from the very back of the line, “if you get separated from the group, or if we run into any trouble, just get to the TUBE. We’ll all meet there.”

Spencer turned back to the door and reached for the knob. “One. Two. Three!” He flung the door open wide and crossed Kirby’s front porch with one flying leap. He hit the ground and started to sprint down the short dirt path to the woods, holding Darwin tightly against him. He could hear the bears lumbering across the porch behind him, and within seconds, Marguerite, Raymond, and Zoe had passed him and were plunging ahead into the darkening woods.

“Spencer!” Kirby suddenly shouted over the sound of tires spinning on gravel. “It’s them!” Spencer spun around. A pickup truck accelerated out of Kirby’s driveway and across her front lawn, heading straight for Spencer. Spencer couldn’t see past the blinding headlights into the truck, but he didn’t have to. He knew it was Margo and Ivan.

“Everyone get to the woods!” Spencer cried. He wrapped his arms around Darwin, trying to hide the prized cub from view as he turned to continue his own sprint to safety. But he was too late: Margo had seen who he was carrying.

“Give me the cub or I shoot!” Margo’s voice shrieked as the pickup truck pulled up beside Spencer. Margo was leaning out of the passenger-side window, a tranquilizer gun clutched in her arms and aimed straight at the fleeing bears.

What do I do?! Spencer started to panic. He was running as fast as he could, but he’d never be able to outrun a pickup truck! Up ahead, he saw Kate disappear into the woods. Aldo, Ro Ro, and Kenny were nearly there. Spencer wasn’t going to make it.
